Las Vegas Philharmonic Opens its Spotlight Concert Series on Thursday, September 22nd at 7:30 pm

By:

The Las Vegas Philharmonic will perform a second season of Spotlight Concerts starting on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. in the intimate Troesh Studio Theater at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Seating in Troesh Studio Theater is general admission at $70 per ticket or patrons can purchase a three-concert subscription to the Spotlight Series for $195. The other two Spotlight Concerts are scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2017 and Thursday, May 4, 2017.

Each Spotlight performance features principal members of the Las Vegas Philharmonic performing three classical works composed for small ensembles. The September performance will include Las Vegas Philharmonic's concertmaster De Ann Letourneau, principal oboist Stephen Caplan, principal violist Jason Bonham, and principal cellist Andrew Smith.

The evening starts with Duo for Violin and Cello, Opus 7, a work by Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, who was known for his richly melodic folk music. Following the violin and cello duo, is Beethoven's dark and intense String Trio in C Minor, Opus 9, No. 3 for Violin, Viola and Cello, composed in the same minor key as Beethoven's heroic works including his Fifth Symphony.

After a brief intermission, the Spotlight performance will end with Mozart's Quartet in F Major, K. 370 for Oboe, Violin, Viola and Cello. "This is deservedly one of the most popular chamber works ever written for oboe. Mozart wrote the Oboe Quartet while in Munich as a showpiece for his friend and oboist Friedrich Ramm. It has many brilliant and unusual features for the time--it is one of the first works to include a high F for the oboe," said Las Vegas Philharmonic Principal Oboist, Stephen Caplan.
