The Kansas City Fringe Festival is around the corner and this year, a new kind of play hits the Unicorn Theatre's Jerome Stage. Produced by veteran Fringe director, Jon Robertson, starring two of Kansas City's favorite actors, Manon Halliburton, and David Fritts, Mannequins, is a "sound play," and the titular character is a full-sized talking mannequin.

Embedded sound technology is a keystone to Robertson's theatre work. Last year's Fringe piece Companionsfeatures a speaking television. Critic Bob Evans says, "Much credit goes to Jon Robertson who...makes the TV a real character in the mind of his actors. His mastery of sound technology stands alone." This year Fringe audiences are invited to "see" sound embody an inanimate object.

This is celebrated Kansas City actor Fritts' first ever appearance on a Fringe production. This is Halliburton and Robertson's second Fringe collaboration, having worked together on Companions, for which Halliburton provided all the recorded television dialogue. Mannequins is written by Jason Ludlow, who along with Robertson, penned previous Fringe pieces Companions, and The Audio Cart.

Mannequins is a dark comedy which, on the surface tells the story of a dysfunctional marriage punctuated by sonic hallucinations. Listen deeper and this is a story of the impermanence of material objects and the search for true human connection.

Keep your ears open for Mannequins on the Unicorn Theatre Jerome Stage during the Kansas City Fringe Festival July 21-31, 2016.
