MARY POPPINS to Fly Into The White Theatre at The J This Summer

It's Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious as the popular family musical "MARY POPPINS" flies onto the stage of the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City (The J). The entertaining show with everyone's favorite nanny will open at The White Theatre on Saturday evening (7:30 p.m.), July 9 continues for an additional seven performances: July 14, 16, 21, 23 at 7:30 p.m. and July 10, 17 and 24 at 2 p.m.

"MARY POPPINS" is a co-production with Johnson County's Theatre in the Park featuring an all-local cast. Following the run at The J, "MARY POPPINS" will be performed with the same cast at the outdoor venue July 29-31 and August 3-6. This production of "MARY POPPINS" is directed by Tim Bair with musical direction by Marsha Canaday and choreography by Kacy Christensen.

Based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, "MARY POPPINS" the charming story surrounding the Banks children, Michael and Jane, whose mischievous behavior forces their parents to hire a new nanny, to "manage" them. Mary takes them on all kinds of magical adventures around London introducing the children to special friends including Bert, the chimney sweep. Through the Banks' family ups and downs, Mary's special presence is infectious with both young and old alike urging us all to believe in magic!

"MARY POPPINS" features a delightful score including such musical favorites as "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Chim Chim Cher-ee," with high-energy dance numbers and colorful sets. "MARY POPPINS" is rated G.

"MARY POPPINS' is packed full of entertaining music, but one of the most exciting aspects of this production is all of the 'magic' that is employed throughout the set design and costuming," said Tabitha Schmidt, The J's Director of Arts + Culture. "The J can't wait for you to see Mary 'fly' and sing-along with all of your favorites! I encourage everyone to take advantage of our exciting surround events that will only add to the magic of the show."

Several special events are planned surrounding "MARY POPPINS" performances at The J including a special "A Very Mary Tea Party"; some events have an additional cost and require advanced reservations These "Practically Perfect Poppins Experiences" include:

  • Sunday, July 10: Meet & Greet with Mary and fellow cast members after the 2 p.m. matinee performance.
  • Thursday, July 14: Backstage Pass-A 30-minute backstage guided tour of the Poppins magic following the 7:30 p.m. performance (Cost: $5 per person) Reservations recommend.
  • Saturday, July 16: Talk Back Session with Director Tim Bair and the cast of "MARY POPPINS" after the 7:30 p.m. performance
  • Sunday, July 17: A Very Mary Tea Party, occurring at 12:30 p.m. just prior to the 2 p.m. matinee performance; (Cost: $15 per person; $12 with purchase of show ticket) Enjoy tea party munchies and refreshments while meeting Mary, Burt, The Banks and many of their special friends. Guests will also receive a goody bag complete with an autograph book! Reservations required.
  • Thursday, July 21: Backstage Pass-A 30-minute backstage guided tour of the Poppins magic following the 7:30 p.m. performance (Cost: $5 per person) Reservations recommend.
  • Saturday, July 23: Meet & Greet with Mary and fellow cast members after the 7:30 p.m. performance

Tickets for "MARY POPPINS" are $23 for the general public, $16 for J members and $12 for students. Group tickets are also available.
