*Position Overview*

The Technical Director directly manages the scenic production elements of 7-8 mainstage plays and 4 youth productions throughout the calendar year. They ensure that all elements unfold on or below budget, on schedule, and meet the highest standards of safety and artistic excellence. They manage a team of professional scenic staff and help coordinate the use of volunteers to support the team as necessary. They also play a leadership role within the community and a supporting role in accommodating events at the Bangor Opera House, including rentals to external parties.



*Responsibilities*

-Daily supervision of the shop staff

-Ensure scene shop is safe, clean, and maintained

-Utilize 15-20 hours per week as a Carpenter (more during tech weeks)

-Analyze scenic designs and estimate build costs as a part of design approval with Production Manager and Artistic Director

-Forge working relationships (and help maintain existing ones) with Designers, including solutions for the inevitable issues that may arise while realizing the design

-Create working drawings for all scenic builds with the help of the Assistant Technical Director (ATD)

-In conjunction with the ATD, create weekly calendars and see that they are followed

-Collaborate with the ATD to ensure all purchasing needs are met

-Oversee and lead scenic builds and painting calls

-Oversee and approve all rigging

-Supervision and general operation of counterweight fly system (including oversight/assistance of annual maintenance)

-Maintain scenic and production supply budgets and keep accurate records of purchases, submitting in a timely manner to the Business Manager

-Collaborate with Production Manager and Assistant Technical Director setting build and install schedules

-Attend all load-in/load-outs, leading as necessary

Work with the Production Manager to ensure stage area is safe, clean, and maintained

-Maintain inventory of equipment and set up maintenance schedules

Maintain stock scenery, furniture inventory, and storage of scenic items

-Provide general support for the overall production quality of each show

-Attend Department Head, Staff, and Production meetings as scheduled

-Report all capital project safety needs and upgrades to the PM for discussion and approval

-Provide assistance when needed for technical set-ups on the property for special events

-Assist with building maintenance and improvements as needed on all properties

-Uphold EDI values in all interactions and continue to expand both personal and professional growth in these areas.

-Other duties as assigned; may include opening up or locking buildings outside of regular business hours.

*Education and Experience Preferred*

-Bachelor’s degree; preferably in Technical Direction or Theater Production

-Experience working as TD, or three years as ATD, at a professional level



*Desired Skills and Knowledge*

-AutoCAD 2D & 3D or Vectorworks

-Computer skills with proficiencies in Microsoft word, excel, and Google Drive

-Willingness to learn programs such as Airtable and Qlab

-Basic theatrical lighting and sound

-Budgeting, structural design, theatrical carpentry, woodworking, welding, and rigging

-Ability to multitask and work well under pressure; meet deadlines.

-Must be self-motivated with strong organizational skills; a positive attitude is essential.



*Staff and Reporting Relationships*

The Technical Director reports to the Production Manager and is responsible for management of Assistant Technical Director, Head Carpenter, Scenic Charge, and any other scenic shop hires.

*Compensation and Benefits*

Salary Range: $43,000

Hours: 40 hours minimum expected

The Technical Director position is a full-time (exempt), salaried position. This individual may participate in the employee benefit plan offered to other full-time employees.
