Educational Theatre Director/Assistant Director - Encore Theatre Group

Positions: Stage Directors and Assistant Directors (Musical Theatre and Straight Plays ) Position Summary: Encore Theatre Group is seeking to expand its pool of musical theatre and straight play directors and assistant directors during the spring of 2022. The Director must be able to balance the dual roles of being the Director of a full-scale production with specific regard to also being an Educator in an educational theatre setting. In your cover letter, please include your educational theatre philosophy and how it relates to your creative work as a director AND your experiences as a director. Duties and Responsibilities: -Establish the creative vision for the production -Engage with participants of all ages (children, teenagers, adults) in a professional manner that prioritizes learning, collaboration, and creative exploration. -Collaborate with various creative and production team members -Communicate frequently and transparently with Encore production staff -Create rehearsal schedules with plenty of notice -Plan out organized, productive, and engaging rehearsals -Be physically present to lead the show through every day of tech -Communicate early and collaborate with necessary team members to ensure a smooth tech process -Create and/or assist in the creation of the tech week schedule, mic plot, shift plot, props tracking lists, ensemble group lists, and other documents as needed -Attend production meetings as scheduled -Attend opening night, at minimum Qualifications: -Ability to work with and engage actors of all ages (children, teenagers, adults) -Excellent communication and collaboration skills -Ability to balance the educational needs of a cast with the creative/production needs of the show -Excellent organizational skills and time management ability, especially in the rehearsal room -Experience directing musicals on a large scale AND in educational settings -Deep understanding of how to integrate music, dance, acting, storytelling, and design -Foundational knowledge of technical theatre elements to aid in communication -Ability to work within a budget About Encore Theatre Group: Encore is an educational, community-engaged theatre company that builds community and transforms lives through the performing arts in the South Bay and greater LA areas.
