Director of Education and Community Practice - Wilma Theater

The Wilma Theater is seeking a Director of Education and Community Practice.



Position Summary

The Director of Education and Community Practice is responsible for developing, planning, and executing the Wilma’s education and community programs for youth and adults. This includes intensive in-school residencies, after-school program, and school visits and other ancillary programming primarily aimed at grades 9-12., as well as our partner-based residencies for adults with local organizations. Additionally, this position will manage our paid classes, which includeacting and directing intensives as well as and the Philadelphia Teaching Artist Initiative professional development collaboration. The Director of Education and Community Practice will collaborate with artistic leadership to develop and reboot programs that align with the organization’s mission, available funding, and revenue goals, potentially including summer day camp, internships and fellowships, and organizational training. This role includes management of department budget and staff, evaluation and reporting of programs, and serves a key leadership position, with input on season planning and a strong hand in designing and implementing strategic goals. The Director of Education and Community Practice reports to one of three Co-Artistic Directors at the helm of the Wilma’s shared Leadership model.



Responsibilities

- Cultivate partnerships and manage existing relationships for residencies in schools and with organizational partners, including scheduling, communications, and evaluation

- Supervise a part-time resident teaching artist and group of 15-20 freelance teaching artists.

- Design and deliver paid professional development for teaching artists and classroom teachers

- Oversee creation of education guides for select productions

- Design and schedule educational ancillary programming around Wilma productions, including pre-show workshops, post-show discussions, backstage tours, and virtual classroom visits. Hire and train Wilma artists to participate in programming

- Oversee student matinee program, including school recruitment, scheduling, and coordination between schools and Wilma staff.

- Design and implement paid programming, such as Camp Wilma, Directing Intensives, HotHouse Intensives and others including hiring, collaboration on messaging and marketing, curriculum development, and ensuring adequate on-site support.

- Assess organizational needs and capacity for fellowship and internship programs, design and oversee with given resources

- Oversee community practice for adults through Portable Studio partnerships and connected Wilma programming, including partner cultivation, curriculum design, and program evaluation

- Manage the budgets for all related programs, including submitting bills and invoices, tracking income and expenses, and reconciling with the business office.

- Collaborate with the Development Department to ensure accurate grant proposals and reports, including budget and program narrative, and communicating with funders as needed.



Position Qualifications

The ideal candidate has a passion for connecting audiences to theater, and is a strong leader with comfort with budget tracking and data assessment. The Wilma works in a hybrid environment, requiring the candidate to learn remote-work software and systems, including Microsoft 365, Bill.com, project management and video conference tools. The ideal candidate will possess and demonstrate an ability to connect to the variety of partners in education and community practice work, from teenage students to school administrators, staff, artists, teachers, and funders.

The Director of Education and Community Practice typically works a 40-hour week during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 10 am – 6 pm), but will also be required to work early mornings, evenings or weekends to oversee projects and activities. A flexible work schedule will be permitted to allow the Director of Education and Community Practice to vary their daily arrival and/or departure times.



Additional Qualifications

Candidate must have or be able to obtain clearances to work with youth in Pennsylvania, though these can be obtained or renewed upon hiring.



Physical Demands

Occasional to frequent lifting of light objects.



Travel requirements

Frequently within the Philadelphia and rarely outside of the Philadelphia area.



Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt role with compensation in the high $50,000s.

COVID-19 Update and Work Environment

Due to Covid-19, the Wilma administrative staff is currently working in a hybrid (remote and in-person) environment. Due to the nature of this position, administrative work can be done remotely, with meetings, teaching, events, and other collaborative work conducted on-site at the Wilma or at partner locations.



The Wilma Theater requires all employees, whose work requires their physical presence on-site at spaces managed and operated by The Wilma Theater, to be fully vaccinated and up to date with the Pfizer or Moderna (bivalent) booster for COVID-19. Being “fully vaccinated” and “up to date” means that an individual is at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine and booster regimen.



In order to be qualified for employment at the Wilma Theater, final candidates must comply with the vaccination requirement or receive an approved exemption. Exceptions to this policy include:

1. Employees who do not report to a workplace where other individuals (such as coworkers or customers) are present

2. Employees who are working exclusively from home/remote environment

3. Employees who have a documented and approved medical or religious exemption.
