Tchaikovsky’s most touching work and the most loved ballet. In Rudolf Nureyev’s version the absolute protagonist is Siegfried, a romantic prince whose soul is more melancholy, contemplative and meditative than heroic. When “his” Lake comes to La Scala, Nureyev keeps the ambiguous symmetrical key role for himself, that of Wolfgang/Rothbart. But it is for the Prince that Nureyev creates demanding variations, placing him in the heart of the dramaturgical structure. The precious and historic staging by Ezio Frigerio and Franca Squarciapino carefully doses lights and colours and reflects the romanticism of the music in a reference to Monet, to represent Tchaikovsky’s pure white swans on the placid yet anxious water of the Giverny garden.
