The plot of As You Like It unfolds in an enchanted forest which in the present version serves as a refuge from a modern world that is in thrall to power and money, a world in which people have lost their privacy: they are followed everywhere, their conversations are tapped, and they have become the “slaves” of a “Big Brother” and an unfeeling dictatorship. In the forest freedom thrives, and poetry, love, and desire flourish. It is a poetic and amusing world replete with wisdom, wit and theatrical energy, sweeping rhythmical music, proving yet again that “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
