Wexford Festival Opera Announces Cast Change For IL BRAVO

By: Aug. 28, 2018

It was announced today that Irish soprano Jennifer Davis, who was scheduled to perform the role of Violetta in the opera Il bravo by Saverio Mercadante at this year's Festival, has with regret withdrawn from the production. Explaining the reason for her withdrawal, Artistic Director David Agler said, "Since Ms Davis was initially engaged to sing the role in Wexford, her voice has developed, and the role is no longer suitable vocally. She would not want to sing the role in a way which would not do proper justice to the music or the public and so, along with Wexford, has regretfully decided not to continue. Wexford Festival Opera and Ms Davis hope that she will return to the Festival in the future."

The role of Violetta will now be sung Russian soprano Ekaterina Bakanova. Ms Bakanova will be known to Wexford audiences for her performances in Hubi?ka by Smetana and La serva padrona by Pergolesi in 2010. She will also be remembered internationally when she stepped into the role of Violetta in La traviata at the Royal Opera House having only five hours to prepare and gave a remarkable performance.

The 67th Wexford Festival Opera will run over 17 days, beginning Friday, 19 October and running until Sunday, 4 November 2018. Tickets can be purchased online 24/7 at www.wexfordopera.com, in person at the National Opera House or by calling the box-office on +353 (0)53 912 2144 or 1-850-4-OPERA Monday-Saturday, 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m.
