New series of Classes Announced at Roscommon Arts Centre

Roscommon Arts Centre, who recently launched their new September - December Autumn programme, have just announced a new season of workshops and classes for both children and adults. These range from dance and music to theatre and visual art. Children and young people will have no shortage of things to do this autumn with plenty of classes for all ages and abilities at the arts centre. Musicians John Wynne and Fiona Doherty return again with their popular traditional music classes for children and teenagers. A well-known local musician, John teaches students both tin whistle and flute and has grown a steady following in class over the last few years. Fiona Doherty teaches fiddle and banjo and her small classes are designed to allow each child to have individual attention. Class sizes are purposely kept small to allow each participant the chance to get one-on-one training.

Artist Anja Sammon begins a bran new after-school art class this Autumn, taking place over thirteen weeks from September right through until December. Specifically geared towards primary school children, participants will discover new skills from painting to construction, print and design and can look forward to taking their artwork home with them every week. Anja has many years experience working with children and has also worked in numerous arts centre around the country.

Roscommon County Youth Theatre will once again meet every Sunday from September onwards. This autumn, youth theatre members working towards a number of performances scheduled to take place in the arts centre in January 2011. Workshops take place in the arta centre every Sunday afternoon and members can look forward to acting classes, workshop with directors, trips to performances as well as meeting other youth theatre members from around the country. RCYT are always looking for new members; if you are aged between 14 and 22 and have an interest in performing or indeed being involved in the wings call the box office for contact details.

In-Step Stage School under the watchful eye of Elaine O'Hanlon, meet every Tuesday afternoon in the arts centre. Classes include musical theatre, jazz, hip-hop and stagecraft and anyone aged 5 - 18 is welcome. Contact the box office for contact details to register your child.

Adults are also included in this season's schedule with Catherine Donnelly returning for another term of Easy Steps dance classes for the over 50's. This Wednesday morning class is aimed towards former participants and will aim towards further improving on those steps you've already learned with a few new ones thrown in. Catherine's classes have proved very popular in the past as an easy and comfortable way to gain exercise and a perfect opportunity to do some socialising. Class sizes are small and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Yoga instructor Kristy Verenga has been facilitating yoga classes in the arts centre for a number of years. Her Tuesday evening classes are extremely popular and always full. The ninety minute class is suitable for both beginners and intermediate level practitioners and offers the perfect way to relax, relieve stress and improve muscle tone. Opera Theatre Company's Roscommon debut with ‘The Diary of Anne Frank'

The acclaimed Opera Theatre Company marks their debut visit to Roscommon Arts Centre with a performance of ‘The Diary of Anne Frank' on Tuesday 28th September, for one performance only. Written by Grigoy Frid, the opera tells the classic and much-loved story of 13-year old Anne Frank during World War 11. Vivid and insightful, this heartrending opera recreates the world of the little girl in hiding, living in hope and fear, longing for normality for herself and her family.

Opera Theatre Company's 24th year of touring opera throughout Ireland continues with this memorable and atmospheric opera. Russian composer Grigory Frid, whose own family suffered enormously under Stalin, was so inspired by Anne Frank's diary that he created the opera in 1969. Sung in English, her powerful optimism and unbending will to live continue to instill awe. With Andrew Synnott conducting Opera Theatre Company's eight-piece chamber orchestra and with direction by Ingrid Craigie and Annilese Miskimmon, this compelling production should not be missed.
