Alan Finch, Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. Managing Director and SOLT Board Member, Dies at 61
The theatre leader left a lasting legacy across British theatre venues and held key positions on the Olivier Awards Committee.
Alan Finch, a longtime British theatre executive who served as Managing Director of Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. and as a board member of the Society of London Theatre, has died at age 61. According to Cameron Mackintosh, Finch died less than four months after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Finch had a profound influence on British theatre throughout a career spanning several decades. He held positions at Nottingham Playhouse and Theatre Royal Plymouth before becoming Executive Director of Chichester Festival Theatre, where he worked alongside Artistic Director Jonathan Church.
Mackintosh recalled first meeting Finch nearly 40 years ago, when Finch was running Theatre Royal Plymouth. Having begun his career as a teenage theatre electrician, Finch went on to become a production manager before moving into senior theatrical leadership.
Mackintosh credited Finch and Church with reviving "the fortunes and reputation of the Chichester Festival Theatre for over 11 years, completely rebuilding the theatre in the process."
Finch joined Cameron Mackintosh Ltd. in 2016, taking a leading role in the reconstruction and expansion of the Victoria Palace Theatre in time for the opening of Hamilton. Over the following decade, he helped oversee Mackintosh's global productions and the continued upgrading of the company's theatres, while also working alongside Drew Cohen on Music Theatre International.
Mackintosh also highlighted Finch's leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, when theatres around the world were forced to close, as well as his subsequent work helping to develop plans for the expansion of the Mackintosh Foundation.
"Alan had many talents beyond his business acumen – most importantly he was a wonderful human being, naturally brilliant with people and a great communicator," Mackintosh wrote. "He took an interest in every department in the theatre, from stagehand to leading actor, from the front of house staff to the director or designer; everyone mattered with Alan and that's why his loss is so deeply felt by everyone who knew him."
Mackintosh had envisioned Finch as one of the executives who would help carry his theatrical legacy forward in the years ahead.
"After 60 years as a producer, I have been able to assemble an extraordinary, talented and loyal team across all my companies to ensure that all my productions remain as sharp and exciting as they were on their first nights," Mackintosh wrote. "In only 10 years, Alan has ensured that his depth of talent has deepened so that our work can continue for as long as the world wants to go to the theatre and see great shows."
He added that Finch remained engaged with the company's work even as his health declined.
"However, even as his body took the inevitable toll from the disease, his mind remained totally focused and rational, still dispensing invaluable advice," Mackintosh wrote. "Till Alan left us he was our guide wanting to ensure that all the exciting plans he had discussed with us could still be carried out without him – and they will."
Mackintosh concluded his tribute, "Thank you Alan, when tomorrow comes you will always be by our side. God bless old friend."
Finch had served on the board of the Society of London Theatre since 2022 and was a member of the Olivier Awards Committee, where he provided guidance and advice to the organization.

He was a leading figure in our theatre community and has left a lasting legacy on every venue and company he worked at, particularly Chichester Festival Theatre and, for the last decade, at Cameron Mackintosh Ltd."
They continued, "Along with so many others, we are lucky to have personally benefited from his wisdom and guidance and are enormously grateful for the contribution he made to the Society of London Theatre & UK Theatre over many years. Our thoughts are with his many colleagues, friends and his beloved family."
Finch is survived by his wife, Alison, and his children, Katie and Tom.
