Madame Walker Theatre Joins Freetown Village for Black History Month

By: Feb. 04, 2011

As events and programs abound at the Madame Walker Theatre Center, the organization looks within to present offerings for Black History Month. Freetown Village has been a resident in the Madame Walker Theatre Center building for over 17 years. This month the Walker is partnering with Freetown Village for a dinner theatre in its historic ballroom on Friday, February 18th at 6:30pm.

Freetown Village's mission is to educate the public about African American lives and culture in Indiana through living history performances, the collection and preservation of artifacts, exhibits and allied programs. The trials, triumphs, and daily life of African Americans are presented through theater, storytelling, folk crafts, heritage workshops, music, day camp, and special events.

The partnership fits perfectly with the mission of the Madame Walker Theatre Center which strives to preserve and build upon the entrepreneurial and philanthropic legacy of its namesake by celebrating the best of African American culture and performance arts. "We are pleased to partner with Freetown Village and to produce what we hope will be the first of many dinner theatres at The Walker," says Dr. Terry Whitt Bailey, President and CEO of the Madame Walker Theatre Center.

The evening entitled "This Little Light..." will feature the singers of Freetown Village and take the audience on a historical musical journey from the mid 1800's through the mid 1900's. Guest will enjoy a scrumptious full course dinner. "The Singers traditionally sing and interpret the meanings of many of the old Negro Spirituals from the 1800s," said Ophelia Wellington, Founding Director of Freetown Village. "In between courses, the singers will change costumes and come back with a medley of songs of a more modern era."

Tickets are on sale now at www.eventbrite.com with additional details at www.walkertheatre.com. For more information call Freetown Village at 317-631-1870 or the Madame Walker Theatre Center at 317-236-2099.
