Suryasth is the story of a man who is on the threshold of his 40th birthday. His life is a storehouse of regrets. He regrets his failure to get married to his childhood sweetheart, his marriage and wife, his fallout with his wife, his inability to gel with his son, his failure to be a successful dramatist and so on.
The protagonist finds life meaningless and he lives in an illusion. He suspects his wife of having an affair with his boss, who he suspects is a Casanova. He cannot establish a common point of contact with his teenage son, who lives in a boarding school in Darjeeling. In short, he personifies misery. In anguish, he stages a virtual trial of the characters in his life whom he invites on his 40th birthday.
The play showcases the ethos of this 40-year-old character with great dexterity. The director has handled the confusion and uncertainty in the life of the protagonist with complete understanding. All the actors excel in their respective roles.
