Standing Ovation Theatre invites the community to experience something truly extraordinary at the 48-Hour Play festival, taking place May 1–3, 2026. This electrifying fundraising event challenges playwrights, directors, and actors to create brand-new original short plays from scratch - in just 48 hours.
The festival kicks off Friday evening, May 1, when four selected playwrights gather to receive their assignments: a cast description, a required line of dialogue, a required prop, and a randomly drawn theatrical genre - Comedy, Thriller, Period/Historical, or Magical Realism/Fantasy. Writers then have just 16 hours to produce a complete 10–15 minute script.
On Saturday, four competing teams, each composed of one director and four actors, receive their scripts and spend the day blocking and rehearsing.
Sunday brings a full public performance beginning at 2:30 PM, followed by a reception and awards ceremony. Eleven awards will be presented, including Best Play, Best Director, Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress, and more - all voted on by the audience using a ranked scoring system.
