The Ensemble Theatre applauds Houston talent with its showcase series "Celebrating the Creative Journey," that includes its next featured project, Nearest the Broken and Belonging, December 3, 4 & 5, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at 3535 Main Street, Houston, TX 77002.

"Houston has an ever-growing landscape of creatives," says Eileen J. Morris, The Ensemble Theatre Artistic Director. "Our arts institutions and supporters must continue to cultivate and invest in the developing works of upcoming artists."

Nearest the Broken and Belonging are two one-woman shows written by Ensemble Theatre actresses Crystal Rae and Rachel Hemphill Dickson. They've been paired to present a double feature performance highlighting their most recent artistic projects.

Nearest the Broken, by Crystal Rae, and directed by Troy Scheid is the story of an actress whose unconventional portrayal of the unconventional women of the Bible has landed her before judge and jury. With death on the table she only has one option...to give the performance of a lifetime.

Belonging by Rachel Hemphill Dickson, and directed by Brandy B. Rood is about Emmaleen, a young woman seeking to grow into herself. She carries the weight of slavery and civil rights on her conscience as she becomes confident and self-assured. Through the tales of African American families, inventors, educators, entrepreneurs, and others, she is propelled forward in finding her space to belong in the world.

"We are incredibly grateful for The Ensemble Theatre giving us a platform to showcase our new work, says Rae. "I took a chance when I moved to Houston several years ago to further develop my artistic talents and haven't regretted it."

Celebrating the Creative Journey is a series of special projects and presentations The Ensemble Theatre has planned outside its main stage season. The upcoming stage readings, exploratory works, and collaborative ventures are designed to showcase developing productions, cultivate new artists, and expose audiences to the variety of artistic expression Houston has to offer.

The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community. In addition to being the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest, it also holds the distinction of being one of the nation's largest African American theatres that owns and operates its facility with an in-house production team.

The Ensemble Theatre produces a main stage season of six contemporary and classic works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The theatre's Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, Artist-in-Residence experiences and live performances for students both off-site and at the theatre; and the Young Performers Program offers intensive summer training for children ages 6 to 17 encompassing instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts.
