The Back Porch Players to Present TEA AND SYMPATHY, 8/1-18
The Back Porch Players will present Tea and Sympathy, the provocative 1953 drama that took Broadway by storm with over 700 performances, at Main Street Theater from August 1- 18. David Rainey of the Alley Theatre Company directs.
Robert Anderson's Tea and Sympathy still reverberates in our national dialogue. The need for acceptance in the face of deep-rooted prejudice is as necessary now as it was sixty years ago.
Inside a New England boy's school dormitory, Tom's classmates taunt him for his sensitive and seemingly unmanly nature. Tom's attempts to compensate for his lack of masculinity capture the attention of Laura, the headmaster's wife. Despite her husband's objections, Laura comes to Tom's aid with more than tea and sympathy and an unlikely romance ensues.
"The play's story raises many questions: Why do these prejudices exist? What do people really fear about someone who is different from them? How far have we come as a society?" says Artistic Director Dan J. Gordon.
For this production, The Back Porch Players will partner with youth organizations and LGBT advocacy groups.
