BooTown's latest puppet show, Turtle Turtle, reveals the life of a reclusive reptile.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1982: A young family brings a new pet turtle into their home. Expectations are high and love is in the terrarium. But it doesn't last long. Days after their pet turtle is introduced to its habitat, it disappears.

Turtle was tired. Turtle never wanted to leave the comforts of the pond. Turtle didn't need owners. Turtle needed space. He found it in the attic. High above the heads of his owners/capturers, amongst their forgotten relics - photos, record collections, toys, busted televisions - turtle lived. Turtle explored. Turtle was free again. But it wasn't meant to last.

They say it was 30 years, but to turtle, it felt like only days. His owners, who finally decide to pilfer through their roof full of memories, rip him from his box and steal down the stairs of the attic, holding him high above their heads and rejoicing in their discovery, celebrating his return to captivity.

Turtle Turtle chronciles turtle's life before and after the recapturing through shadow puppetry.

"I'm excited about using animals anthropomorphically and allegorically," says Emily Hynds, director/creator and co-artistic director for BooTown. She adds that for this show BooTown will experiment with a number of new-to-them technologies including multiple projectors and rolling screens to produce constantly moving images.

Hynds is joined by fellow co-artistic director Lindsay Burleson and puppeteers Larkin Elliott (River Bottom Rules, Love in the Time of Lasers) and Peter Zama (River Bottom Rules, Love in the Time of Lasers). This production will also include an original score provided by Joe Wozny (Mijo, Love in the Time of Lasers).

Hynds says she is also looking forward to set design as she plans to create a site-specific stage for BooTown's favorite home, Rudyard's Pub in the heart of Montrose.

"It's a space we're super familiar with so we'll be able to create something that should be pretty cool," Hynds said.

Turtle Turtle runs June 21 and 22 at 9pm, June 28 at 10pm and midnight and June 29 at 9pm. All performances are at Rudyard's, 2010 Waugh. Tickets are pay-what-you-can and can be purchased at the door. For more information, visit www.bootown.org.
