Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company to Offer Free Reading of A HEROINE-FREE SUMMER, 2/16

Mildred's Umbrella Theatre Company presents a reading of A HEROINE FREE SUMMER by local poet and playwright, Janet Lowery. The reading will be Monday, February 16, 2015 at 7:30pm at Studio 101, 1824 Spring Street, Houston, TX 77007. Directed by Chesley Krohn, the reading features Charles Krohn, Jennifer Decker, Patricia Duran, Christie Guidry, Elizabeth Seabolt-Esparza, Lyndsay Sweeney, Eddie Edge, and Darnea Olson.

Synopsis: The dream of an idyllic summer at a family lake house in upstate New York is disrupted by old allegiances among the sisters and confessions of drug use by two of the family's teenage sons. The super-hero among the sisters has to figure out whether to try and save the clan or cut and run amidst these new eruptions on the grounds of the family estate.

About the playwright: In 1990 Janet Lowery, Ph.D. joined the faculty of the University of St. Thomas in Houston from Binghamton University in upstate New York. Her poetry has been published in literary reviews such as Endless Mountains Review, Poetry East, Greensboro Review, Concho River Review, Fideles, Pennsylvania English, 13th Moon, and elsewhere. Her poetry has also appeared in several anthologies including the 2011 anthology of Texas and Louisiana Poets: Improbable Worlds, edited by Martha Serpas, Texas in Poetry: A 150 Year Anthology (University of North Texas Press, 1994), Texas in Poetry 2 (TCU Press, 2002), the twentieth-year Poetry East anthology Who Are the Rich and Where Do They Live? and Women's Blood (Continuing SAGA Press, 1981),

A chapbook of her poetry, Thin Dimes, was published by Wings Press in the nineties. Her collection of poetry based on women from Greek mythology called Traffic in Women was published in 2008 by Odonata House; the trilogy of plays TRAFFIC IN WOMEN I, II, III-Educating Athena, A Grief Group in the Underworld; and A Retrial of the Danaids, respectively, was produced 2006-2008 on the UST campus. She recently completed a manuscript of translations from the Spanish of Miguel de Unamuno.

She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist, a foundational practitioner of Reconnective Healing, and certified in The Reconnection.
