KIMBERLY AKIMBO Opens 4/12 at Country Playhouse

By:

The Country Playhouse will present Kimberly Akimbo by David Lindsay-Abaire in its Black Box venue for three weekends only, April 12 - 27. Performances are on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on April 21 at 2:00 p.m., plus a weeknight show on Thursday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m.

Teenager Kimberly is afflicted with a premature aging disorder, so she appears to be an elderly woman, but is beset with all the woes and tribulations of postmodern family life - screwed-up parents and a zany lesbian scam-artist aunt, then there's this nerdy high school boy who arouses reluctant romantic longings. By turns haunting and hilarious, the play spirals into unreal antics before emerging as a tender fable of empathy and acceptance. Anybody who's ever felt old before their time can relate.

Directed by Aimee Small, the cast includes Lee Raymond, James Reed, Amanda Baird, GIna Williamson, and Rolando Cantu, Jr.

Playwright Lindsay-Abaire is best known for Rabbit Hole, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2007, but he also wrote Wonder of the World (in 2000, the same year as Kimberly Akimbo), as well as the book and lyrics for Shrek: The Musical (2009). Most recently, his play Good People opened on Broadway in 2011, and went on to win a Tony nomination plus a Best Actress award for its star, Frances McDormand.

Ticket prices are $22 for adults, and $19 for students and seniors. Groups of 20 or more receive a $5.00 discount off the adult price. Call the box office at 713-467-4497 for reservations, or make them online at www.countryplayhouse.org (at no additional charge).

The Country Playhouse is located at 12802 Queensbury, Houston 77024 (across from CityCentre), just two blocks east of the Sam Houston Tollway.
