By:

The 2014 Houston Arts Partners Conference, "The Global Classroom: Cultures and Communities" will welcome Featured Speaker James Haywood Rolling, Jr. The author of "Swarm Intelligence: What Nature Teaches Us about Shaping Creative Leadership" will speak today, September 5, 2014.

The conference runs September 5 - 6, 2014 at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Co-Chairs: Rozie Curtis, Theatre Under the Stars, and Larry Matysiak, Cy-Fair ISD. Advance Registration is now open!

Dr. James Haywood Rolling Jr. is the author of the new book Swarm Intelligence: What Nature Teaches Us About Shaping Creative Leadership, a surprising look at the social origins of creativity, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2013. Drawing upon cutting-edge research in the realms of biological swarm theory, systems theory, and complexity theory, Rolling shows why adaptive social networking and the natural principles of self-organizing, collaborative competition make us both smarter and more creative than a conventional emphasis on the promotion and high-stakes testing of individual achievement. Dr. Rolling is a Dual Professor of Art Education and Teaching and Leadership in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the School of Education at Syracuse University.

The 2014 Houston Arts Partners Conference, entitled "The Global Classroom: Cultures and Communities," draws on Houston's diversity and cultural riches to enhance the classroom experience and advocate for equitable arts access for all children.

This annual arts education conference combines inspiring advocacy from nationally known arts-in-education leaders and hands-on introductions to arts-based classroom tools for all subjects, developed by Houston's arts partner organizations.

The conference explores the benefits of knowing how to make connections through the arts-whether across cultures or within a school curriculum-in a world increasingly interwoven with technology, trade, and job mobility. Hosting the conference in Houston, a city known for its diversity, is instrumental in the success of spreading awareness for the changing demographic landscape nationally. Houston's ahead-of-the-curve demographic transformations give Houston's arts educators an unprecedented opportunity to forge these connections, and our artistic and cultural resources give educators unparalleled opportunities for partnerships that can help them do just that.
