Da Camera presents Charles Lloyd And The Marvels, 2/14 Da Camera of Houston brings National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master saxophonist Charles Lloyd with his quintet, the Marvels, to the University of Houston's Cullen Performance Hall on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 8 PM.

Born in Memphis, Lloyd's musical career has spanned 70 years. He was given his first saxophone at age 9, and as a teenager he played with saxophonist George Coleman and supported greats including BB King, Howlin' Wolf and Johnny Ace. He left Memphis for Los Angeles in 1956, where he spent nights playing in jazz clubs and days studying classical music at the University of Southern California under Halsey Stevens. Lloyd was among the first to experiment with blending rock and world music elements into the genre. His career flourished throughout the 1960s.

After withdrawing from the music world for a decade to focus on transcendental meditation in Big Sur, he resumed recording and touring in 1981. Since his return to Blue Note Records in 2015, Lloyd's creative powers have only deepened with the formation of his quintet, the Marvels. The 2015 live album Wild Man Dance showed Lloyd's taste for experimentation undiminished, while 2016's I Long to See You found him exploring American standards from "Shenandoah" to Bob Dylan's "Master of War," not to mention revisiting songs from Lloyd's earlier catalog, alongside guest singers including Willie Nelson and Norah Jones.

In Houston, Lloyd performs with legendary guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Reuben Rogers and Houston-native drummer Kendrick Scott.

Tickets for Charles Lloyd and the Marvels start at $37.50. Tickets are available by contacting Da Camera, 1402 Sul Ross, at 713-524-5050 or online at www.dacamera.com. Tickets for students and senior citizens are always half-price. $5 student rush tickets are available 30 minutes before the concert begins.

Da Camera of Houston's concerts feature small ensembles performing chamber music, jazz, early music and contemporary music. A vital institution in the world of chamber music, Da Camera is a source of innovative programming, notably Artistic and General Director Sarah Rothenberg's programs connecting chamber music with literature and the visual arts. Da Camera is nationally acclaimed for thought-provoking chamber music programming, as well as a jazz series with a unique balance between renowned performers and emerging artists.
