BCCM to Present RIDIN' HIGH, 5/16-18

By:

BAYOU CITY CONCERT MUSICALS continues its popular cabaret series with RIDIN' HIGH: Cole Porter in the 1930s, at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, May 16; 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 17; and 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 18, 2015. The evening of song will again be presented at the Performance Centre of the Ensemble Theatre, 3535 Main between Holman and Berry Street, in the heart of Midtown. (Entrance to The Centre is located on the corner of Fannin and Berry directly behind the theatre and has convenient free parking, courtesy of Houston Community College.)

Known for his sophistication and wit, Cole Porter was at the height of his artistic and commercial powers in the 1930s. One of the few Broadway masters who wrote both the music and lyrics for his songs, Porter's string of hit shows during the decade included Gay Divorce (later adapted for the screen as The Gay Divorcee), Anything Goes, Jubilee, Dubarry Was A Lady, and Red, Hot and Blue. Porter also wrote music for Hollywood during the 30s, including films such as Born to Dance and Rosalie. In 1937, Cole Porter was injured in a horseback riding accident that left him disabled, but despite constant pain, he continued to work and produce hundreds of classic songs that have been recorded by artists from Ella Fitzgerald to Yo-Yo Ma. Porter is a member of both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the American Theater Hall of Fame.

BCCM's cabaret evening will feature such Porter classics as Begin the Beguine, Night and Day, Just One of Those Things, I've Got You Under My Skin, and You're the Top, sung by Houston's favorite musical theatre performers. The evening's master of ceremonies will be popular Houston actor Joel Sandel, who will weave the story of Porter's life and art into the musical journey through Porter's music.

Tickets are $25.00 and are available by calling 713-465-6484 or on line at bayoucityconcertmusicals.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, but reservations are recommended.
