Hawai‘i Opera Theatre presents "The Sheltering Tree," the first professional Hawaiian opera, premiering in the 2025-2026 season. This groundbreaking production explores pivotal events in Hawaiian history, focusing on the diplomatic efforts of Timoteo Haʻalilio, a close ally of King Kamehameha III, during the restoration of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the pursuit of international recognition. The opera features a blend of Hawaiian language, chant, and hula, capturing themes of cultural pride and sacrifice, with music by Herb Mahelona and a libretto by Victoria Nālani Kneubuhl. Internationally acclaimed baritone Quinn Kelsey will portray the lead character, further emphasizing the significance of this historic narrative.
