Originally produced at the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre last December, the award winning script for Joker was written by UH Mnoa MFA candidate Yilong Liu. The play was recognized twice by the Hawaii State Theatre Council, receiving Pookela awards for Best Actor Jason Kanda and a special adjudicator award for Original Script.

Now produced at Kumu Kahua Theatre, the cast contains two actors from the original production: Jason Kanda and Denise Aiko Chinen. The other two cast members are: Jim Aina, returning after a successful run at Kumu Kahua Theatre in Shoyu on Rice, and Randall Gallius Jr., who appeared in and was recognized with a Po?okela award for his performance in My Name is Gary Cooper at Kumu Kahua Theatre.

Set around the fight for marriage equality in Hawaii, one man's normal simple life unravels as a promise kept is threatened by a visit of a man from his past.

Joe is unable to let go of a lover who has passed away, which negatively affects his current relationships. He begins to harbor resentment and becomes a man who causes pain not only to himself, but to all those close to him.

Love, secrets and betrayal abound in this realistic look into lives touched by fear of exposing one man's love for another.

Tickets for performances can be purchased with a credit card by calling 536-4441, or by visiting the box office at 46 Merchant Street (corner of Bethel and Merchant Streets, downtown) between 11am and 3pm Monday through Friday. Tickets can also be purchased at KumuKahua.org.
