Honolulu Theatre for Youth Presents MUSUBI MAN, 3/2 & 9

By: Feb. 27, 2013

By popular demand, Honolulu Theatre for Youth brings back Musubi Man, Lee Cataluna's colorful adaptation of one of Hawai'i's most popular children's books. The delightful romp continues on onstage at Tenney Theatre Mar. 2 & Mar. 9 at 9:30 and 11 a.m. American Sign Language-interpreted (ASL) performance is Mar. 2 at 11 a.m.

Single tickets are $10, all ages. Tickets may be ordered online at www.htyweb.org or by calling HTY at 839-9885. Walk-ups are welcome on a space available basis.

Last presented in HTY's 2008-09 season, Musubi Man, with its irresistible refrain, "Run, run, as fast as you can! You no can catch me, I'm one musubi man!," is a perennial hit. The pidgin-speaking Musubi Man, like the gingerbread man in the classic tale, is determined not to be eaten. He leads his pursuers-a taro grower and his wife, a poi dog, a noisy mynah bird, and a mongoose on a merry chase, until he reaches the ocean and lands on the shoulder of a radical surfer dude. Designed to foster young children's pre-literacy development, the clever script brings the story to life with plenty of opportunity for kids to interact and help with the storytelling.

Adapted by Cataluna from the book by Sandi Takayama, Musubi Man is directed by Alvin Chan and features HTY company actors Nina Buck and Jordan Savusa. Set and props designer is David Gerke, costume designer is Sandra Payne, and puppet design is by Morgan Lane-Tanner.
