Disney's FREAKY FRIDAY Gets SE Regional Premiere By Slow Burn Theatre

Hailed by The Washington Post as "a polished, peppy, modern fairy tale," Disney's Freaky Friday opens Slow Burn Theatre's season at the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Thursday, October 18-Sunday, November 4.

Based on the novel by Mary Rodgers and the Disney films, this classic story of a mother and daughter who magically swap bodies for 24 chaotic hours has been given a contemporary spin with a hilarious new book and pop score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey who won Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Next to Normal.

Slow Burn Theatre Artistic Director Patrick Fitzwater directs and choreographs this southeast regional premiere which stars Laura Hodos and Kimmi Johnson as the mother and daughter. They are joined in the cast by J.R. Coley, Brayden Carroll, Chris Robertson, Samantha O'Donnell, Christina Groom and an ensemble featuring Chris Alvarez, Rebeca Diaz, Mike Dinwiddie, Sara Elizabeth Grant, Sahid Pabon, Nicole Piro, Casey Sacco, James Skiba, Corey Vega and Kelly Ziegler.

Scenic designer Michael McClain, lighting designer Thomas Schorrok, sound designer Rich Szczublewski, costume designer Rick Pena and musical director Paul Tine are the creative team behind the production.

In a review of a production in Washington, D.C., the theater trade newspaper Variety reported, "If only we could see the world through each other's eyes, we could finally achieve true understanding. That eternal quest, exploited so inventively in Mary Rodgers' 1972 book Freaky Friday and in the subsequent Disney film adaptations, is captured again as a delightfully spunky musical...."

Disney's Freaky Friday is produced by Slow Burn Theatre and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International. Funding for this project is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

Disney's Freaky Friday will offer an open captioned performance on Sunday, October 28 at 2 p.m. Open caption performances have a text display located to the side of the stage that scrolls dialogue and lyrics synchronized with the performance making theater more accessible to deaf or hard of hearing individuals.

Disney's Freaky Friday runs Thursday, October 18-Sunday, November 4 with performances Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. with an additional matinee on Wednesday, October 22 at 1 p.m.
