Rigoletto, the jester at the court of the Duke, is cursed by a nobleman whose daughter has been seduced by the Duke and whom Rigoletto has mocked because of this. Soon Rigoletto's own daughter falls prey to the Duke, and the jester seeks revenge...
The fate of the cursed jester is cruel, but the music is Verdi at his finest, with many familiar tunes such as La donna è mobile and Gilda's aria Caro nome. The title role is one of the most demanding for baritone singers in the repertoire. The new production of the FNO is an impressive piece of elegant and austere musical theatre.
