Overview
Hedgebrook's Writer-in-Residence program awards two- to three-week residencies on Whidbey Island, Washington to women-identified writers across genres, including playwriting. Residents stay in individual handcrafted cottages with chef-prepared meals; the residency itself is free of charge though travel is not covered, and the organization notes a partially subsidized fee structure with scholarships and fee waivers for applications. Applications are read blind by genre-specific readers and alumnae judges; roughly 1,100 writers apply each year for more than 60 residencies.
Eligibility
Women-identified writers 18+ (inclusive of trans women and female-identified individuals); playwriting is an eligible genre; $45 application fee.
Notes
Model shifted to a partially subsidized fee structure; scholarships offered. 2027 residencies scheduled Feb-Dec 2027.
