The Scratchpad Series is a Playwrights Realm program for early-career playwrights anywhere in the United States, created to remove geographic and economic barriers to working with the company. Selected playwrights receive a $1,000 award, paid rehearsal time, up to a week of paid development with a director, cast and Realm artistic staff, a reading (internal or public), dramaturgical feedback, and travel and housing support. Both plays and musicals are eligible, and preference goes to projects that cannot be served by the NYC-based Writing Fellowship.

Today, at a time when most development opportunities for writers and artists have disappeared, The Playwrights Realm is launching their annual open submissions for their 2021/2022 Writing Fellowship (the company’s longest-running artistic development program) and Scratchpad Series.
