Overview

The National Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center selects unproduced musicals, song cycles, operettas and hybrid works from an open national submission process for a two-week, writer-driven workshop residency in Waterford, Connecticut. Each piece is paired with a director, dramaturg, music director, musicians and actors, receives about 34 hours of rehearsal, and is presented in three public script-in-hand readings. Writers receive room and board, a stipend, and a 'Dream Responder' of their choosing; applications for the 2027 conference are open September 16-30, 2026 with a $15 fee.

Eligibility

Open submission of new musicals; $15 administrative fee per script; writing teams apply together.

Notes

Sister program to NPC; 2027 NMTC accepting submissions per Submittable. Stipend amount not published on site.
