A MacDowell Fellowship is a residency of up to eight weeks at MacDowell in Peterborough, New Hampshire, giving artists exclusive use of a studio, accommodations and three meals a day at no cost, with financial assistance available for travel and expenses such as rent, lost income and childcare. Theatre is one of seven eligible disciplines alongside architecture, film/video, interdisciplinary arts, literature, music composition and visual arts, and roughly 300 fellowships are awarded each year by anonymous discipline-specific panels judging solely on artistic excellence. The deadline for Spring-Summer 2027 residencies is September 10, 2026.
Open to theatre artists incl. playwrights, librettists, composers; international applicants welcome; work-sample based; no residency fee.

The Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH is teaming up with MacDowell and New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) to launch Across the Table Conversations, a new multidisciplinary talks series spotlighting MacDowell Fellows in public dialogue.
