Shotgun Players' MAD Fellowships in Berkeley, CA pair early-career theatre artists with a mentor designer on one mainstage production in lighting, scenic, sound, costume or props design. Design fellows commit up to 80 hours over about seven weeks, from design meetings through tech and opening, and are paid Berkeley minimum wage plus free tickets and access to rehearsals across the season; ten design fellowships are offered each year alongside directing observerships, a production management fellowship and stage management fellowships. 2027 applications opened September 4, 2026 with a November 1 priority deadline and require a headshot, resume, work sample and two recommendation letters.
Early-career/emerging artists with design and construction experience on at least one production (academic or not); housing and travel not provided; must hold valid US work authorization. About 10 design fellows per season.
