$950/week for up to 7 weeks (max $6,650) + round-trip travel; up to $600/week partial housing reimbursement for out-of-town recipients
The Drama League Irene Gandy Directing Assistantships pair early-career BIPOC/Global Majority directors with acclaimed mentor directors as assistant directors on professional productions at theaters across the United States. Recipients receive $950 per week for the in-person rehearsal and preview period (up to seven weeks), travel if they live more than 35 miles away, partial housing reimbursement of up to $600 per week for out-of-town recipients, and lifetime Drama League membership. The 2027 application opens in September 2026.
Early-career BIPOC/Global Majority directors from historically underserved communities. Number varies annually.
2026-27 mentor directors: Lili-Anne Brown, Melissa Crespo, Timothy Douglas. Past host theaters include Guthrie, LCT, MTC, McCarter, Public, Seattle Rep, Trinity Rep, Yale Rep.
