Overview

The Bay Area Playwrights Festival, established in 1976 by Robert Woodruff and run by Playwrights Foundation in San Francisco, is one of the oldest new-play festivals in the United States. Selected playwrights receive two readings of their play over two weeks, each preceded by a week of rehearsal with a director, dramaturg and actors; the second reading takes place during a Theater Professionals Weekend that draws producers and literary staff from around the country. The festival now runs biennially with applications in even years; alumni include Annie Baker, Nilo Cruz, Samuel D. Hunter, Lauren Yee and Rajiv Joseph.

Eligibility

National open submission of full-length plays.

Notes

One of the longest-running new play festivals in the US; recently shifted to a biennial schedule with 47th festival in fall 2026 (601 applications).
