Overview

The Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition solicits scripts from leading MFA playwriting programs across the U.S. and selects four finalists and one winner each year. The winning play receives a full production in the Alliance Theatre's regular season in Atlanta, and all finalists receive development support including staged readings with industry professionals in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. The program is intended to move student playwrights into the professional theatre; alumni include Tarell Alvin McCraney, Mike Lew and Meg Miroshnik.

Eligibility

Students in their final year of graduate playwriting programs (submitted through participating MFA programs).

Notes

23rd competition winner (2026): The Red Man by JuCoby Johnson (Juilliard). Alliance/Kendeda Week readings held Feb 2026.
