BREAKDOWN

JOANNA (ROLE IS CAST) (she/her) 35-40. White. A lesbian. The youngest of four siblings, perpetual baby. She hates to need, but is desperate to be taken care of. The terror of her situation is always hovering, but she has her strategies for avoiding it at all possible costs: running towards a plan, making a dark joke, or focusing in on something or someone else. She's grown up in this family, which means she knows how to fight, to wound, to avoid.

NAOMI (ROLE IS CAST) (they/them) 30s. BiPoc. Joanna's partner. A non-binary lesbian. They are an only child who lost their single mom last year and turned towards Buddhism as a way to survive. They are desperately grasping at that toolset now that their partner is sick and the future is unknown. They have rage, they have desperation, they have hope, they have anxiety, but they are trying desperately to cope, to not let those feelings overtake them. For themselves and for Joanna. Breathe in and return to an open space. Look at those feelings. Name them as thoughts. Breathe out.

THERESA (ROLE IS CAST) (she/her) 45-50. White. Joanna's older sister. The oldest sibling, the nurturer. She's naturally self-sacrificing because she was raised to be. She raised her three siblings, then her husband, then her daughter. Now that her daughter is leaving the nest, she's finally ready to take up a little space in her own life. Unfortunately, that space has taken the form of an Instagram addiction and a crippling obsession with horses.

RORY (he/him) 40s. White. Joanna's older brother. The second child, the prodigal son. A recovering meth addict. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He has a habit of saying the absolute worst thing a human being could possibly say, and yet somehow you love him for it. He has the charm of someone who knows how to get what he wants. But underneath the fool, there's a hidden sense of danger, regret, and deep rage. He would win in a knife fight.

HENRY (ROLE IS CAST) (he/him) L30s-E40s. White. Joanna's older brother. The third child, middle child complex. It's not his fault that he's always right and that he knows everything. Despite being the successful one, he's completely victimized in his own family for no good reason. He sees through Rory's bullshit, but somehow, he's the monster for pointing out that the liar is lying. He's extremely protective of his baby sister, Joanna. He thinks their toxic bickering is just banter. Sometimes they both enjoy it.
