PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS:

All actors will be expected to exhibit mastery of the character-appropriate British accent in their audition. Please do not submit a tape if you are not confident that it will demonstrate sufficiency in this area.

Please slate with your name and what side or monologue you have chosen. Prepare a side from
https://minttheatercompany.sharefile.com/share/view/sf5df0436c2904bd9b4bb6176657c859a OR a brief monologue from a Noel Coward play.

The Rat Trap was written by Noel Coward in 1918, when he was 18. It was published before it was produced in 1926, both came after Coward had achieved fame and notoriety as an author and an actor. The Rat Trap tells the story of a marriage between two authors, from the eve of the wedding through to the time when the inevitable strain of competing ambitions and jealousies becomes too great. It displays the expected wit and charm, but it is also a biting, no-holds-barred drama.

PLEASE NOTE: Mint Theater Company is a member of the Off-Broadway League, and we join with Actors' Equity Association and other league members in embracing the commitment to Diverse and Inclusive Casting as expressed in the latest collectively bargained agreement:

It is the desire of the parties that employment for Actors shall continue to reflect a multi- racial society that also includes Actors with disabilities. Toward that end, Actors' Equity Association and the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers will continue to encourage to the best of their abilities a flexible and imaginative casting policy which is called Diverse and Inclusive casting.

Diverse and Inclusive casting is for the purpose of increasing employment for Actors of color, women, seniors, and Actors with disabilities and is for the casting of the aforementioned Actors in roles where race, age, ethnicity, sex or the presence or absence of a disability is not absolutely essential to the play or the character's development. To this end, the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers shall expand the dissemination of audition and hiring notices in a manner that assists in the recruitment of actors and stage managers from groups that have been historically excluded from the theater industry.

It is also the intention of the parties that in furtherance of this policy, with due regard for the requirements of and suitability for employment, and with the understanding that there can be no interference with the contractual rights or artistic discretion of the Playwright, Director or Choreographer, the Producer shall endeavor to engage Actors of color, women, seniors and Actors with disabilities.

SEEKING:

SHEILA BRANDRETH: (Female, Mid 20’s, any ethnicity) Bright, ambitious, full of energy and feeling. She is equally committed to her marriage and her literary career, but wise enough to know when something has to give. Speaks with an RP dialect.

OLIVE LLOYD-KENNEDY: (Female, 35-45, any ethnicity) Chic, cynical, astute, witty and tough. Devoted to Sheila. Writes a gossip column that she doesn’t take as seriously as her readers. Speaks with an RP dialect.

KELD MAXWELL: (Male, late 20’s early 30’s, any ethnicity) Sharp-tongued, temperamental and occasionally volatile. To all appearances, a well-groomed man about town. Keld is a rising playwright inclined to read his notices, memorizing the good ones, and believing them too. He has the capacity to learn from his mistakes. Speaks with an RP dialect.

NAOMI FRITH-BASSINGTON: (Female, 20’s-30’s, any ethnicity) Too earnest to know how silly she sounds. Passionate in everything, especially her opposition to marriage. Very progressive, very modern, very hip. Writing her new book, “Faith’s Plaything,” she sees right through Ruby and is a good friend to Sheila. Speaks with an RP dialect.

EDMUND CROWE: (Male, 20’s-30’s, any ethnicity) Struggles to keep up with his partner Naomi and everybody else but tries valiantly. Speaks with an RP dialect.

RUBY RAYMOND: (Female, 20’s, any ethnicity) A former chorus girl with an eye on stardom, which she will definitely achieve. Ruby is brilliant in inviting underestimation and in making the most of her opportunities. Common, but very charming, very attractive, very funny, even if it appears that she doesn’t know it. Speaks with a Cockney dialect.

BURRAGE: (Female or non-binary, over 50, any ethnicity) Unflappable, loyal, determined to serve even when being mistreated. Far wiser than some realize. Speaks with a London dialect.

OTHER
We are seeking a fully vaccinated company. Actors must be fully vaccinated prior to first rehearsal.
