Breakdown

THE LIQUID PLAIN: On the docks of late 18th century Rhode Island, two runaway slaves, Adjua and Dembi, plan a desperate and daring run to freedom. When a chance encounter triggers an unexpected collision of worlds, painful truths are uncovered and the brutality of past crimes spills into the next generation. Winner of the 2012 Horton Foote Prize for Promising New American Play, The Liquid Plain brings to life a group of people whose stories have been erased from history.

SEEKING:

ADJUA
Female, Black, early 20s. Born in West Africa. Adjua is smart, playful, has a sense of humor, and is never sentimental. She can dream, but her dreams have enough body to wear clothes. She has a powerful curiosity and creativity, and this keeps the ghosts of her past beside her, speaking to her, rather than tormenting her.

DEMBI
(**Note—this character is Transgender. Open to seeing Female, Transgender actors for the role.) African-American, early 20's. Born into slavery in Charleston. Dembi is a bit more romantic than Adjua, but it’s not a soft or poetic romanticism. He's tough and so are his dreams. He's also almost as sexy as he is smart. And he's very smart. His past weighs heavily on him, but even when he's tormented by it, he prides himself on carrying it lightly.

CRANSTON
Male, White, 27 years old. A sailor born in the American Colonies. Cranston is very charismatic and uses it when he can, but he's also a truly excellent sailor, with a working-class sensibility. Has a good sense of humor. Looks out for himself before he looks out for others.

LIVERPOOL JOE
Male, Black, 20's/early 30's. A sailor who grew up in Liverpool. A man of many abilities—flexible, intelligent, charismatic, with a strong will and seriousness underneath his easy countenance.

BALTHAZAR/WILLIAM BLAKE
Male, White, 30's/40's. Balthazar: a United Irishman. Passionate in a humorous way—not your typical union man. He's missed a lot of boats but he always feels the next deck under his feet. William Blake: the English poet (1757-1827). Not at all ‘poetic’ in the canonical sense. Thrilled to be back in the flesh now and then. Mercurial, light, humorous.

BRISTOL
Female, Black, 40’s. Grew up in England. Brilliant, curious, self-assured, but with a hard fear she keeps under control just below the surface. She thinks she knows herself well but continually surprises herself, and not always pleasantly. Underneath the surface of her refinement, the will of an assassin lurks. All her life she has been searching, and this searching keeps her alive.

JAMES DE WOOLF
Former US Senator, Slaver, 70’s. Full of contradictions. There are places inside him that have died long ago, though he lives his life so that he does not know it. Intelligent, full of a creative emptiness that's just out of his reach.

NESBITT
Male, Black, 50’s/60’s. An old sailor. Smart, lively, even when near death. Very much in the present moment.

GIFFORD
Male, White, 50’s/60’s. An old sailor. Not as smart as Nesbitt, but willing to pretend to be so. Afraid of death but hides it well.

GUINEA WORM
Male/Female. Just what it is (and more beautiful and ugly than we imagine.)
