BREAKDOWN

FOLLIES

[SALLY DURANT PLUMMER]: (She/her, 50s) Soprano. The youngest of the former Follies. Still remarkably like the girl she was thirty years ago, but haunted by the realities of marrying a man she didn't love. Needy and delusional at times, and hopelessly in love with Ben. Dance skills required, tap a plus.

[PHYLLIS ROGERS STONE]: (She/her, 50s) Mezzo Soprano. Stylish and intelligent. A woman who made her husband her life, the journey has hardened her and replaced the traces of life with cold sophistication and poise. Dance skills required, tap a plus.

[BUDDY PLUMMER]: (he/him, 50s) Baritenor. Withered and charismatic – the quintessential travelling salesman, married to Sally and haunted and agitated by the knowledge that she loves his old friend, Ben.

[BENJAMINE STONE]: (he/him, 50s) Baritenor. Distinguished. Successful. Authoritative. A man bent on success from a young age who has achieved it and now realizes the toll it had on personal relationships. Married Phyllis but wonders what could have been.

[YOUNG SALLY]: (she/her, 20-25) Soprano. A younger version of the adult Sally. Petite and Sweet-faced like an old film star. Bubbly. Adventurous. Wants it all but may not have the patience or drive to wait for it. An excellent dancer. Tap required.

[YOUNG PHYLLIS]: (She/her, 20-25) Soprano. A younger version of Phyllis, when she was an energetic and naïve Follies girl. With all the drive and none of the sophistication of the adult Phyllis. An excellent dancer. Tap required.

[YOUNG BUDDY]: (he/him, 20-25) Tenor. A younger version of the Buddy we see today. Charismatic and lively, a man who knows how to have fun. Loves Sally blindly and wants to give her the world.

[YOUNG BEN]: (he/him, 20-25) Tenor. A not yet fully realized version of the man we see before us today, he is driven and intelligent but not quite so distinguished and not yet frightened by his success.

[STELLA DEEMS]: THIS ROLE IS CAST. (she/her, 50s to 60s) Alto with Mezzo notes. Half of a former performing duo with her husband, but they gave it up to open general store in Miami. Loves life and has led a good one. Dance skills required, tap a plus.

[SANDRA CRANE]: THIS ROLE IS CAST. (she/her, 50s) Mezzo-Soprano. A former Follies dancer. Dance skills required, tap a plus.

[HATTIE WALKER]: THIS ROLE IS CAST. (she/her, 60s to 70s) Alto with Mezzo notes. An appealingly tough, no-nonsense lady. A former Follies girl from the earlier years of the shows. She has married several times and always to the same type: the bad boy.

[SOLANGE LA FITTE]: (she/her, 60s to 70s) Mezzo Soprano. A French fashionista. Very much still alive and enjoying it, she is a perfume creator and seller. Has travelled the world but loves Paris more than any other place.

[HEIDI SCHILLER]: THIS ROLE IS CAST. (she/her, 70s to 80s) Soprano. The oldest of the former Follies dancers. An opera star with Viennese elegance. Still glamorous and respected, but alone and nostalgic.

[YOUNG HEIDI]: THIS ROLE IS CAST. (she/her, 18-25) Soprano. A younger version of the Heidi we see today. Already glamorous and poised but has yet to grow into a sense of seniority.

[DIMITRI WEISSMAN]: THIS ROLE IS CAST. (he/him, late 70s-80s) Spoken role. The producer of the Follies between the two World Wars and owner of the theater where the story takes place. Launched many careers, and married several times, but now, as his theater is being turned into a parking lot, he's alone.

[ROSCOE]: (he/him, 60s to 70s) An elderly showman with a majestic tenor voice who introduces the Follies girls as if no time has passed and they are still the glamorous showgirls of years ago.
