Breakdown

SEEKING:

Dar:
Male, 20s. A rural Pakistani who speaks English with a thick Punjabi accent. Curious but obedient, Dar serves as Nick’s guard during his captivity. As the play progresses, he departs from his role as timid servant to confident, menacing enforcer.

Nick Bright:
Male, 30s to 40s. An American, Caucasian banker working in Pakistan, he is smart, resourceful, quick on his feet, with the confidence that comes from leading a mostly frictionless existence. He’s been taken prisoner by Imam Saleem and his men and must negotiate for his own release, remaining fairly collected despite the tense situation. He’s not afraid to stand up for himself but also has moments where he succumbs to fear.

Bashir:
Male, late 20s to 30s. One of Imam Saleem’s men, a UK-born and raised Pakistani who speaks English perfectly with a working class English brogue. Intense, arrogant and aggressive, with a sizable chip on his shoulder, Bashir is also somewhat insecure about his place in the world. Highly opinionated with a bad temper, he is blunt and forceful, yet has an underlying eagerness that emerges when learning about the markets. He and Nick grow to like and even respect each other over time.

Imam Saleem:
Male, 40s to 50s. Regal and oozing with charisma, Imam Saleem is the leader of a Pakistani anti-government group that has captured Nick. He is articulate, but speaks with a pronounced Punjabi accent. Imam Saleem is calculated, collected, and indulgent in the control of his men.
