Breakdown

The Imaginary Invalid, Moliere’s final play, is among his greatest works. The illusory agonies of the wealthy Argan, a housebound hypochondriac who sorely desires to marry his daughter to a doctor, have proved tonic to audiences ever since the play premiered in 1673.

Seeking:

Please note: This is an all male production. The female roles will be played by men. All roles are available unless otherwise specified.

ARGAN: Male. 50s. The imaginary invalid. A worried hypochondriac, he is desperate for medical attention but hates paying medical bills. Easily manipulated but thinks he is in control. Prone to melodramatic fits of hysteria and temper tantrums. Must be able to do physical comedy.

ANGELIQUE: Male actor plays female, 20s. Argan’s devoted daughter who is in love with Cleante. Youthful, beautiful and feminine. An innocent romantic, her young love is so genuine and deeply felt that it is both touching and amusing. Must be a skilled comedian who can sing.

CLEANTE - Male, 20s. Angelique’s lover. Youthful, masculine and attractive, devoted and cunning. Must be a skilled comedian who can sing well.

MONSIEUR DIAFORUS / MONSIUS PURGON – 50’s – 60’s. Male. Argan’s physicians.
Immensely self-serious, self-important doctor-types. Sour, dry, and hilarious. Both roles will be played by the same actor.

BELINE: Male actor plays female, mid 20s – early 30’s. Argan’s second and current wife. A social climber and deadly male femme fatale. Cunning and deceptive, she pretends to love Argan but only married him for his money. Must be a skilled comedian.

THOMAS DIAFORUS - 30’s. Male. Budding young doctor and son of Monsieur Diaforus. Vacant and often grinning, like a ventriloquist’s dummy. Comically dull and bewildered. He is betrothed to Angelique. Must have a great comic timing.

BERALDE - 30s – 40’s. Male. Argan’s younger brother. He is the voice of reason and the only self-aware character. Recognizes that Argan is melodramatic. Exuberant and full of energy, he is sensible, intelligent and witty.

MONSIEUR FLEURANT / MONSIEUR BONNEFOY – Male. 50’s – 60’s. Monsieur Fleurant is Argan’s sensitive and sarcastic apothecary. Monsieur Bonnefoy is a scheming notary who tries to get Argan to leave Beline all of his money. Both roles will be played by the same actor.

LOUISE- Seeking male actor 18+ to play 15-year-old girl. Argan’s youngest daughter. Wide-eyed, blunt and matter-of-fact. Must have great comic timing.

TOINETTE - CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Male actor plays female, mid 20s – 50’s. Argan’s maid. Wary of Argan's theatrics, she knows how to manipulate him. Protective of Angelique. Clever, quick witted and opinionated. Must be a skilled comedian.
