THE HUSTLER AND THE NUN
[TOM BANCROFT] (This role is on offer.) 30s. This character is white. 5'10 or taller. Wild, passionate bad boy. Tom is a handsome pool hustler, drug dealer, and life of the party. Dancing, women, booze - in his own words he's a glutton for everything. Despite his bold outward demeanor, deep down Tom is depressed and doesn't believe he's worthy of anyone's love. He doesn't trust rules or authority, but is also kind and always rooting for the underdog. Tom is a blast to be around, although Act II reveals the dark side of his addiction. Tom's unexpected encounter with Nancy, a young Catholic nun, forces him to face the question of whether or not he can love and be loved, and what it takes for a man to truly change. With strong comedic skills and rock/folk/pop vocals.
[SISTER NANCY] (CAST) Late 20s. This character is white. Soprano/Mezzo Soprano. Sincere, curious, and open-hearted. Nancy is in her seventh year of being a Catholic nun, and is starting to question her connection to the divine. A vision at the age of twelve sends Nancy on a holy path, but lately she's been feeling more distant from her faith and craving the deep sense of wonder and awe she had back then. Nancy is smart, playful, and has a huge heart. She is led by her desire to affect positive change for everyone she meets. However, she's unprepared for the feelings of attraction and connection that come from meeting Tom, a lost but kind pool hustler. With comedic skills and a powerful range.
[ANGELA] (CAST) 30s. This character is Black. Funny, strong, and often guarded. A bartender and long-time friend of Tom, Angela is smart, funny, and good-hearted. She is stuck between her old ways of being Tom's obedient partner in crime, and living a fuller, more independent life. Deep down, she's tired of having unrequited romantic feelings for Tom, of being one of the only Black women in a white community, and of feeling like she can't truly be herself. With comedic skills and a powerful vocal range.
[SISTER MARIE] 30s-40s. Any ethnicity. A wise and devout Catholic nun, Marie is Nancy's closest friend and a shining example of piety. She knows the bible front to back and offers guidance to the spiritually searching Nancy. Marie is also the more stable straight woman of the nun duo with the fearful and awkward Sister Ann. She is fully prepared to take the fast-approaching final vows.
[SISTER ANN] (CAST) 20-40. Any ethnicity. Sister Ann's bizarre imagination, anxiety, and social awkwardness make her a bit of an oddball in the church. Often too shy to speak in more than whispers or mumbles, others are constantly asking Ann to repeat herself and speak up. Ann has lived a sheltered life, and experiences each new moment with a mix of shock and wonder. Although she revels in the spiritual, she has a secret wild side that she occasionally has trouble hiding.
[FATHER ALÉSAGE] (CAST) 40-60. Any ethnicity. The local Catholic priest, Father Alésage is a man of rigidity and tradition. He leads mass with monotone sing-speak - a soporific drone that justifies the name Alésage (French for boring). He directs the nuns with strict, although not unkind, guidance. The introduction of a reckless pool hustler into his small church community provokes Alésage's judgement, but the righteous priest may be hiding more compassion and leadership than meets the eye.
[BRUCE] (CAST) 30s. Any ethnicity. A staple of Angela's bar, Bruce is always down for drinks and some shit talk. He's snarky but not mean, and is generally looking to forget his problems and have a good time. He and his best friend Maggie, along with Tom and Angela, make up the core members of the bar crew. Although he puts on a carefree fuck it attitude, Bruce's shame and fear around being gay are fueling his depression and addiction issues. Doubles as DEXTER - a mental health patient prone to conspiracy theories with an attachment to a beloved chair, as well as ITCHY - one of Tom's high school buddies in a 1950s flashback.
[MAGGIE] (CAST) 30s. Any ethnicity. Maggie is a sweet, daffy, member of the core bar crew. A sex worker by night, Maggie has her shit together more than bar regulars Tom and her best friend, Bruce. Maggie hasn't had good luck with men, and is jaded in that department. Her encounter with Sister Nancy may open her eyes to another life path. Doubles as EMMY - Tom's ex-wife, a hippie who had enough of Tom's debaucherous ways.
[DOT] Mid 40s-mid 50s. This character is white. Nancy's mother is a strict Catholic and terse, Franco-American woman. She's had a tough life and often shows more judgement than kindness. The pressure she puts on daughter Nancy to be perfect is constant, although coming from a place of love. When Nancy becomes a mother herself, the two start to gain insights into each other's apparent shortcomings. Doubles as JACKIE, a regular at the bar.
[JUDY] (CAST) 40s-60s. Any ethnicity. Judy is a quirky and endearing mental health patient in the group led by Nancy. She has a heart of gold, suffers from dementia, and also believes that she can see the future. In fact, who's to say she can't? She sometimes forgets that her late husband, Harold, has passed, and she's at risk of being prescribed a major regiment of shock therapy. Doubles as PAT - a bar regular, and HELEN - Tom's grizzled and bitter mother.
[OFFICER JOHNSON] (CAST) 30s-40s. This character is Black. Tom's newly-appointed parole officer, Johnson is strict but fair. He's charming and charismatic, especially when he meets the lovely local bartender, Angela. Johnson projects a thick skin, but being the only minority officer on the force has been wearing on him. Doubles as a store CLERK and DR. JOHN in flashback scenes.
[MAINE JANITOR] (CAST) 50s-60s. This character is white. The ol' kindly Maine Janitor works at the mental hospital, although he pops up in other surprising places. He always has a friendly word and a wealth of information to share. His thick Maine drawl and positive attitude tell us that he's at home in his skin and never in a rush. Doubles as GERALD - a bar patron with an unusually high voice, and NIXON - note: strong Richard Nixon impression a plus.
