BREAKDOWN

THE GRADUATE

WaterTower Theatre is dedicated to diversity and inclusion as a core value, and as such we strongly encourage actors of all ethnicities and gender identities to submit. In reference to the character descriptions below — most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following descriptions. But however limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be as inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide (from language developed by Kevin Kantor and Emily Tarquin from the Actors Theatre of Louisville).

SYNOPSIS

The Graduate - Set in 1960s California, The Graduate follows Benjamin Braddock, a freshly minted college grad with top marks, proud parents...and absolutely no idea what to do next — until Mrs. Robinson enters the picture. This darkly funny, iconic story of seduction, confusion, and coming-of-age gets a bold new life on stage. Adapted from the cult novel and classic film, this premiere production dives into Benjamin’s chaotic, hilarious, and very adult education.

NOTE: This production of THE GRADUATE will contain nudity and simulated intercourse.

SEEKING

BENJAMIN BRADDOCK

A 21-year-old recent college grad returning home to Pasadena. Straight-A student, aimless, anxious, awkward yet secretly bold. Balances charm, confusion, and emotional growth from lazy kid to someone desperate to take control.

MRS. ROBINSON

A sultry, affluent woman in her 40s. Trapped in a loveless marriage and leaning into a nihilistic affair with Benjamin. Exudes dangerous sophistication, wit, world-weariness and hidden vulnerability.

MR. ROBINSON

Mrs. Robinson’s ineffectual husband and father of Elaine. Polite, wealthy, a classic 1960s businessman. Slightly aloof, protective, and easily mocked but conceals his capacity for confrontation and jealousy.

ELAINE ROBINSON

Late teens/early 20s, bright, optimistic, and compassionate — the antithesis of her mother. Initially idealistic, then hurt and conflicted when finding out about Benjamin and Mrs. Robinson. Grows into self-assuredness and emotional intensity.

MR. BRADDOCK (DAD)

Benjamin’s father. Supportive, proud, businesslike. Warm exterior masking traditional expectations. Should feel genuine but oblivious to Benjamin’s internal struggles.

MRS. BRADDOCK (MOM)

Loving and enthusiastic. Overly proud, eager for Benjamin’s success. Tends to be talkative, idealistic, slightly naive.

ENSEMBLE ROLES (All Genders & Ethnicities)

Versatile performers of all genders and ethnicities for featured ensemble roles including:

STRIPPER

A small role in a nightclub scene. Flashy, sultry, playful, an embodiment of Benjamin’s boredom with conventional norms.

HOTEL CLERK / PSYCHIATRIST / PRIEST

Hotel Clerk: Polite, faceless receptionist, flirts with Benjamin’s surname.
Psychiatrist: Professional, clinical presence during Benjamin’s therapy scene.
Priest: Formal, confessional tone during the church sequence.

WEDDING GUESTS

Multiple small/no-dialogue parts: bar patrons, wedding guests, party-goers.
