BREAKDOWN

THE CEILING

SEEKING

BOOKKEEPER (Ageless): An ethereal, haunting observer who seems to exist both within the town and beyond it, carrying an air of prophecy wherever she appears. A mysterious soprano with a rich middle register; the Beggar Woman meets Mary Poppins. Range: A3 to B5, primarily C4 to G5, with an optional D6.

KEVIN (30s to 40s): Melissa's husband, preoccupied with understanding the descending ceiling while remaining painfully blind to the collapse of his marriage. A true lyric tenor with warmth, vulnerability, and emotional complexity. Range: C3 to A4, with a strong F4; A2 preferred.

MELISSA (30s to 40s): Kevin's wife, a passionate woman awakening to everything missing from her marriage as the ceiling closes in around them. A powerful contemporary singer with a lyrical upper extension; Elphaba meets Mother in Ragtime meets Phyllis in Follies. Range: G3 to D5, with head voice through F5.

SCARLETT (20s to 60s): A vintage cabaret singer and clear-eyed witness to the town's unraveling, observing its inhabitants with wit, sensuality, and hard-earned compassion. A smoky, theatrical alto; Lesley Ann Warren, Patina Miller, Bebe Neuwirth, Eartha Kitt, Julie London, and Dionne Warwick. Range: A3 to D5.

MITCH (30s to 40s): Kevin and Melissa's neighbor and friend, whose instinct is to escape, even when escape comes at the expense of those closest to him. A compelling contemporary baritone or tenor with charm, restlessness, and an undercurrent of danger. Range: dependent upon casting.

RACHEL (30s to 50s): Melissa's friend and Scarlett's coworker at the local bar, offering warmth and grace in a world rapidly losing both. A grounded folk and contemporary alto; Carole King meets Tracy Chapman. Range: A3 to B4.

JOSHUA (18+ to play child, any gender): A lonely young boy who meets the end of the world with an almost constant shrug, as though disappointment arrived long before the ceiling did. A youthful character mezzo in the world of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Range: C4 to D5 (or C3 to D4, actor depending).

BOBBY (18+ to play child, any gender): An openhearted, imaginative young boy who still looks at the approaching end of the world with wonder. A youthful character mezzo in the world of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Range: C4 to D5 (or C3 to D4, actor depending).

WESSON/BARKEEP/GLEASON (30s to 60s): A familiar town presence who embodies the comforting routines and eccentric personalities of ordinary life. A distinctive character baritone/tenor with tremendous comic instincts; Brooks Ashmanskas or Christopher Sieber. Range: D3 to F4.

SILENT MAN/BANSHEE (Ageless): A visceral embodiment of the fear and dread spreading through the town as the ceiling draws nearer. An electrifying pop-rock tenor with theatrical intensity and an Adam Lambert quality. Range: F3 to B4.
