Prepare a short classic comedic monologue no more than 2 minutes.

Bring picture and resume, stapled together.

NOTES: Robust actors with major comic chops, as well as ability to do Shakespeare, are required for this piece. Distinct and odd-looking folks are desirable – like at the circus. It’s a rough world filled with schemers, tricksters, clowns, fools, brutes and con-men. Need actors who are able to play an instrument. Don't know the doublings yet, but it’s an ensemble piece, and most actors will be asked to double.

Katherina:

Should read mid-20s to mid-30s. A force of nature. A rebel. Robust. Charismatic. Wild. Stubborn. Temper. Has been misjudged by everyone all her life. She sees the world for what it is and refuses to accept it. By the end she falls in love. Shouldn't be an ingénue. Or if she is naturally she must be able to appear otherwise. Must have tremendous range and emotional depth. Must have comic chops .

Petruchio:

Should read 30s to late 40s. From Verona. Charismatic, brave, a rebel, pragmatic, strapped for cash, mercurial, very smart. A leading man. Refuses to take anything seriously. Sees the world as it is. Falls in love. Must have comic chops. Different from all the other men in the play.

Bianca:

Should read 20s. Katherina’s younger sister. A clever girl. Aware of how she affects men. Uses that to her advantage. Like a cat toying with mice. A bit rotten underneath it all. Should be a parody of an ingénue. Must have comic chops. Must be able to sing and should play an instrument.

Biondello:

Should read in his 20s. Servant to Lucentio. Sweet. Comedic. Obedient. Should play an instrument.

Vincentio:

Should read 50s to 60s. A gentleman of Pisa; father of Lucentio. A merchant of incomparable wealth. Prone to violent outbursts. Should play an instrument.

Merchant:

Should read 50s to 60s. A teacher from Mantua. He agrees to impersonate Vincentio. Not the brightest. Should play an instrument.

Widow:

Should read 30s-50s. A rich woman who marries Hortensio. Contemptuous, shrewish. Should play piano.

The following roles have been CAST. Actors auditioning will be considered for possible replacements if needed.

Already cast: Gremio, Grumio, Lucentio, Hortensio, Baptista, and Tranio
