BREAKDOWN

St. Louis Black Repertory Company 2025-26 Season

SEEKING:

DANCE ON WIDOW'S ROW (SPT 5)

Note: All characters are late forties to mid-fifties.

Magnolia Mag Ellis — Wealthy, good looking widow who is determined to marry again. Magnolia is the leader and the mayor of the street known as Widow's Row. Quick to speak her mind and is never lost for an opinion. Knows how to be a southern charmer when the situation calls for it. Magnolia has buried two husbands who had great life insurance policies.

Annie Talbot - Age forty. A devout church goer. Annie has buried four husbands. Claims to have been a virgin until the age of twenty-five. Annie is Magnolia's friend. Annie likes to think of herself as delicate and gentle, but something else seems to be lurking under the surface. Especially when several choice curse words occasionally slip out. Lives on Widow's Row. Lives on many pensions and trust funds.

Simone Simi Jackson - An also ran actress who never quite made it in New York. Simi returned home to Port Town one year ago where her husband died. Simi has suspiciously cashed in a huge insurance policy: Talks of her days in the theater and all those commercials that she shot. People, however, only saw one. It was bad. Lives on Widow's Row. Third house from the corner.

Lois Miller - Widow. Has buried two husbands. Everyone in town suspects that Lois poisoned her husbands. A straight arrow that has resigned herself to being a widow for the rest of her life. A fun loving person inside waiting to burst out. Magnolia's friend. Lives on Widow's Row and a pension.

Deacon Hudson — Widower. Handsome and church going. Deacon is very rational. Not a Christian fanatic. Likes Magnolia. Considered in town to be a good catch for some lucky woman. Financially secure. Invested well.

Newly Benson — Retired Army Sergeant. Newly is Deacon Hudson's best friend. Newly is not fond of Widow's Row. Thinks that it's cursed. Has a strong and often funny opinion. Believes in honor and loyalty. Thinks of himself as a lady's man. Recently divorced.

Randolph Spears — Divorcee. Loves a good party and loves to eat. Has done well in the turkey business and is considered a good catch by the ladies in town. He dies at Magnolia's house.

THE BLACK FEMINIST GUIDE TO THE HUMAN BODY (SPT 4)

Dr. Beatrice “Bea” Free - Black woman, late 50s-60s. African American Studies department chair and history professor who specializes in Black women’s history. She wears a white tank top with blue jean shirt, or a tailored white shirt, and black pants. She’s barefoot. She is Mind.

Cee Cee - Black woman, any age but with girly youthful energy. Joyful, innocent singer/dancer, strong yet soft and beautiful, and very alive and very spiritual. She’s wearing a flowing dress with a tight top. She is Body, one of Bea’s alter egos.

Dee - Black woman, any age. Tired, tender, tame but witty. Very real. Her sharpness masks her vulnerability and righteous anger. She is Soul, another one of Bea’s alter egos.
