BREAKDOWN
JORIS IVENS: charming, easygoing, and sophisticated - a Gatsby-like ease and charm. The life of the party, but by the end of it you'll have told him everything and still have no idea who he is. Underneath, he's obsessive about his art, powered by anxiety about himself and his relationship. A man with a slippery edge who has taught himself how to compromise and keep compromising. White, 30s or 40s.
HELEN: sharp, pragmatic, witty, a few steps ahead of everyone. Joris’ girlfriend. She’s evasive and magnetic. She sees the big picture at a glance - though her fierce pride at being effective is complicated by the feeling that she is no longer an artist. White, 30s. Cast. Seeking understudy.
ERNEST HEMINGWAY (ERNEST). A brash and powerful charm. Underneath: secretly self-hating, full of insecurity and emotional fragility, close to the edge — and therefore prone to overcompensating. A real wound at the core. White, mid-30s to 50s range.
JOHN DOS PASSOS (DOS): a deeply decent man who can be naive. His charm is erudite, literary, but he wears his heart on his sleeve and he isn't good at pretense or covers. His decency makes him vulnerable in a way the others aren't. White, mid-30s to 50s range. Cast. Seeking understudy.
KARL: A KGB operative who has always profoundly loved opera music. A giant of a man in size and stature and voice, imposing and intimidating… but when he hears music, we see a softer side. Able to sing opera. 30s-50s. Cast. Seeking understudy
