Ensign Nellie Forbush (US Navy): (Female-identified, 20s, Mezzo – Ab3-C5) An optimistic, tomboyish nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas. Falls in love with Emile, but must grapple with her own prejudices for their relationship to progress.
Emile de Becque: (Male-identified, 40s, Baritone – A2-E4) A wealthy, sophisticated French planter on the island.
Ngana: (Female-identified, 9-13, Vocal Range: D4-C5) Emile’s daughter. Pacific Islander, speaks French.
Jerome: (Male-identified, 7-10 Vocal Range: D4-C5) Emile’s son. Pacific Islander, speaks French.
Henry: (Male-identified, 20s-30s) Emile’s native servant. Speaks French.
Bloody Mary: (Female-identified, 40s, Mezzo – B3-C4) A native Polynesian merchant who sells souvenirs to the American sailors. Wants to find a husband for her daughter, Liat, who can give her a better life.
Liat: (Female-identified, early 20s) Bloody Mary’s beautiful Polynesian daughter. Falls in love with Lt. Cable. Speaks French.
Luther Billis: (Male-identified, 20s, Baritone - B2-D4) Stubborn but loveable, comic character. Marine with no respect for authority.
“Stewpot” George Watts: (Male-identified, 20s) A Sailor and Luther’s cohort.
“Professor”: (Male-identified, 20s-30s) A sailor and Luther’s cohort.
Lt. Joseph Cable (USMC): (Male-identified, 20s, Tenor – D3-G4) A handsome and intelligent officer newly stationed on the island.
Capt. George Brackett (US Navy): (Male-identified, 30s-40s) The commanding officer; highest-ranking officer on the island.
Cmdr. William Harbison (US Navy): (Male-identified, 30s-40s) Brackett’s executive officer, second in command on the island.
