BREAKDOWN

SHAKESPEARE IN THE STREETS

SEEKING:

Richard: an East St. Louis mayor who’s running for re-election, his family has run the city for years and abides by the status quo at the expense of residents’ needs - stubborn, selfish and often tyrannical with some redeemable qualities, a middle-aged man, Black.

Ron: Richard’s right-hand man and campaign manager, middle-aged Black man, push-over, extremely loyal to Richard, insecure.

Lisa: Richard’s sister-in-law and widow of Richard’s brother, a former ESTL mayor. Very confident and aware of her power, despises Richard, Black woman in her 30s.

Veronica: Richard’s mom, elderly Black woman, voice of reason, wise, close to Lisa.

Eric: Richard’s opponent in the mayoral race, Black man in his 20s, prioritizes the needs of the people, very community-centered.

Ghost 1: Black male, any age, represents ESTL baseball player Sam Jethroe.

Ghost 2: Black male, any age, represents ESTL jazz musician Miles Davis.

Ghost 3: Black female, any age, represents ESTL dancer Katherine Dunham.
