PERPETUAL SUNSHINE AND THE GHOST GIRL
SYNOPSIS
Featuring an all-women+ cast and an original through-composed 1920-2020s mashup score, Richard Rodgers Award-winning musical Perpetual Sunshine & the Ghost Girl tells the true story of the capitalist exploitation and knowing radium poisoning of workers by the U.S. Radium Corporation—and the women who fought back.
SEEKING
Grace: mid 20s. A firecracker. She wants to take her place as a modern woman in the burgeoning new age of World War I where women are joining the work force. Grace is ambitious and independent. She craves freedom and financial autonomy. VOCAL: Pop/rock belter. Solid D5 required. Please bring in one pop/rock piece that shows range and one contemporary MT selection (not pop) that shows dramatic range.
Mollie: mid 20s doubles as Ghost Girl G6 (See below). Mollie works at the factory with her two sisters, Albina and Quinta. Mollie is an innocent, but she loves Grace's verve for something new. Mollie and Grace become best friends. Mollie has a sweet tooth and a sense of responsibility to the family. VOCAL: Belt to D5. Should be comfortable in both MT and MT pop styles. Strong sense of late 1920's/early 1930's vocal stylings necessary. Both a good comedic and dramatic sense are required. Please bring in one comedic selection and one selection that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style. One of these pieces should also show range.
Katherine: mid 20s. Floor leader at the factory. She enjoys training the new workers in the art of dial painting. Katherine believes in the system. She enjoys order. VOCAL: Belt/mix. Flexible range. Should be comfortable in both traditional MT and MT pop styles. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
Edna: mid 20s. Edna loves dancing and flowers. She is a nervous Nellie. Edna believes the rules are there to protect her and give her safety and when that safety is questioned, she can become destabilized. The love of dancing contradicts her need for safety but that complication is very human and thrums within her. VOCAL: Belt/mix. Flexible range. Should be comfortable in both MT and MT pop styles. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
Quinta: mid 20s. Quinta's nickname is May. She is the fifth child in the Maggia family. Quinta is married and has two small children. Her husband, James is abusive. Because of this, Quinta really craves stability. She is very close with her sisters, Albina and Mollie. She works to balance her role as a breadwinner with the subservient role she must play at home to keep the peace. VOCAL: Belt/mix. Flexible range. Should be comfortable in both MT and MT pop styles. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
Albina: mid 20s. Albina's nickname is Bena. Bena is the wisecracking, loud-mouthed older sister. She is tough but jolly. She enjoys a good time and loves her family most of all. She is single at the start of the story, but married by the end. No children, although she wanted them. She is supported by her Catholic faith at all times and quietly takes comfort in it, which gives her confidence. VOCAL: Belt/mix. Flexible range. Should be comfortable in both MT and MT pop styles. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
The Ghost Girls: 20s-30s; Five total. After her death, Mollie becomes the 6th Ghost Girl.
Ghost Girl 1: Media Singer, Dr. Sabin Von Sochocky, Arthur Roeder; Clarence Lee (30s-40s) Can easily move between these three characters with definition. Dr. Sabin Von Sochocky: The founder of the Radium Luminous Material Corporation. He invented the radium paint known as Undark. He begins the play as a Willy Wonka-type. He is an inventor who finds much joy in his work and is quite pleased with all of his accomplishments. He ends the play with an unexpected betrayal of the women who filed the lawsuit. Arthur Roeder: The second Chairman of the company formerly known as the Radium Luminous Material Corporation, now known as U.S. Radium. He is a bean counter. He is only interested in the bottom line and will do most anything to retain his position. Clarence Lee: The third and final Chairman of U.S. Radium. He is cold and calculated. Human suffering is meaningless to him. Only profit is meaningful. VOCAL: Strong pop/rock belt. Solid D5's required. Should be able to go toe to toe with Grace vocally. Please bring in a pop/rock selection that shows range and a non-pop MT selection that shows versatility.
Ghost Girl 2: Media Singer, Manager, Frederick Flynn (20s) Manager: The managers almost always flank the chairman. They are stone-faced and wear sunglasses. The Matrix of the 1920's. They do the bidding of whoever is the Chairman. Frederick Flynn: Flynn is a toxicologist and professor at Columbia University. He is often employed on the side by U.S. Radium to handle examinations of women who are becoming ill at the factory. He testified on behalf of U.S. Radium multiple times and made statements denying that any women were ill because of their exposure to radium. Their issues were attributed to venereal disease, female hysteria and a lack of hygiene. By the time Frederick Flynn appears in the play, we are approaching a heightened sense of performance to embody the power of capitalism. VOCAL: Strong pop/rock belt. Solid D's. Should be able to go toe to toe with Grace vocally. Contemporary non-pop MT vocal flexibility is also necessary. Must be able to hold a part. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
Ghost Girl 3: Media Singer, Manager, Consultant, Edward Markley (20s-30s) Manager: The managers almost always flank the chairman. They are stone-faced and wear sunglasses. The Matrix of the 1920's. They do the bidding of whoever is the Chairman. Consultant: The Consultant appears alongside Frederick Flynn to examine Grace Fryer. Although he claims to be a Consultant, he is actually the Vice President of U.S. Radium in disguise. Edward Markley: Lawyer for U.S. Radium. He is a wolf-like corporate lawyer and his interest is in the corporation's success at any cost. He is a master at the game of litigation. His success is unrivaled. VOCAL: Strong pop/rock vocal style and 20's girl group MT vocal styles are necessary. MUST be able to hold a part. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
Ghost Girl 4: Media Singer, Katherine Wiley, Dr. Cecil Drinker, Dr. Harrison Martland (20s) Katherine Wiley: Wiley is the head of the New Jersey Consumer's League which was established after the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911. The League investigates worker complaints against their employers. They are especially known for supporting women who are just now becoming part of the work force. Dr. Cecil Drinker: He is an industrial hygiene expert who works at Harvard. He is brought into U.S. Radium by its management to investigate the women's claims of illness caused by their workplace. His wife, Katherine Drinker is also a physician who works alongside him. Dr. Harrison Martland: Martland is a pathologist who is investigating the illnesses and deaths at U.S. Radium. His interest was piqued when a male scientist died and it made the news. VOCAL: Strong pop/rock vocal style and 20's girl group MT vocal styles are necessary. MUST be able to hold a part. Please bring in one selection that shows contemporary pop rock style and one that shows 1920's/early 1930's vocal style.
Ghost Girl 5: Media Singer, Katherine Drinker, Raymond Berry (20s) Katherine Drinker: A doctor. She is married to Dr. Cecil Drinker and they work together to create the report on working conditions at U.S. Radium. A woman had to have a spine of steel to be a doctor in the 1920's. Raymond Berry: Attorney who represented the five women through their trial in 1928. Berry is very young and fresh out of law school, which is perhaps why he took their case after they had been rejected by attorneys for two years. Berry is young and confident. He is not a fool. VOCAL: Strong pop/rock vocal style and 20's girl group MT vocal styles are necessary. MUST be able to hold a part. Mollie, as Ghost Girl 6: Media Singer, Alice Hamilton, Florence Fontina, Judge Backes (20s) Alice Hamilton: Dr. Alice Hamilton is an occupational health expert and workers' rights activist. She works for Hull House in Chicago. Dr Hamilton often worked as a consultant alongside Dr Cecil Drinker and Dr. Katherine Drinker. A woman had to have a spine of steel to be a scientist in the 1920's. Florence Fontina: A fictional radio star of the 1920's. She is everywhere. She is sultry and fabulous and epitomizes what a capitalistic society needs a woman to be. When the factory workers' illnesses threatened U.S. Radium's bottom line, she is hired to sing on a new jingle to entice women to apply for jobs with the company. Judge Backes: The judge in the women's trial in 1928. Backes is a dude's dude. He loves the game of law. VOCAL: See MOLLIE above.
